The SCRMC faculty and staff extend our condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Gary Lyons, PhD, who died on January 30.
Lyons was a member of the SCRMC and a professor emeritus in the Department of Cell and Regenerative Biology at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. Beloved as a teacher for generations of medical students and a dedicated researcher, Lyons published over 130 scientific papers and book chapters advancing the understanding of cardiac developmental biology, often using stem cells as a powerful tool. He served on the Stem Cell Research Oversight Committee for ten years, eight years as chair, during a time when the science and politics of human pluripotent stem cells were rapidly evolving.
The SCRMC is grateful for Lyons’ dedication to stem cell research and all that he contributed as an educator, researcher, collaborator, and mentor.
