Title: The future of cellular therapy in peripheral vascular regeneration
Abstract: Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is a highly prevalent and morbid condition leading to decreased blood flow in the lower extremities. Lack of regenerative function in patients with PAD leads to disability and can result in major amputation. Despite modern surgical therapies, there remains over 150,000 leg amputations annually due to PAD. Novel pharmacologic and cellular therapies provide hope for patients in need of regenerative therapies. Specifically, induced pluripotent stem cell-derived endothelial cells (iPSC-ECs) have demonstrated the potential to restore perfusion in ischemic murine hindlimbs, and are poised to address this critically unmet need.
