Title: The ISSCR Consortium: Advancing Human Stem Cell-Based Models in Drug Discovery & Development
Abstract: Human stem cell-derived disease models provide a unique opportunity to accelerate drug discovery and development through more predictive preclinical models. However, despite recent progress in recreating precise cell types and complex organoids of increasing in vivo fidelity and disease relevance, their adoption by pharmaceutical companies into drug development pipelines has been slow and is often met with hesitation. This is in part due to a lack of standardized criteria and unified consensus for model qualification that would ensure acceptance of such next generation in vitro models by regulators. In response, the ISSCR has launched a global consortium of industry and academic scientists working with regulatory experts to establish standards, develop tools, and build the collaborative infrastructure needed to accelerate responsible integration of stem cell-derived models, alongside the complementary use of informative animal models, into the drug development pipeline. This presentation will share the latest developments of the ISSCR Consortium and its progress towards supporting the adoption and acceptance of stem cell models by drug developers and regulators.
