Title: Using autofluorescence to identify neural stem cell state

Abstract: Adult neural stem cells in the hippocampus are primarily in a quiescent state, and have to activate to enter the cell cycle and begin the production of newborn neurons. This rate-limiting step has been difficult to identify as the fate is maintained, and only cell state is shifting. Using measures of intensity and fluorescence lifetime of specific autofluorescence signals from NAD(P)H and a lysosomal-associated signal, we were able to identify quiescent neural stem cells both in vitro and ex vivo, revealing the exciting underlying biology that defines these cell states. To further our technical ability to study this in a high throughput manner, we are developing novel tools. This talk will highlight how collaboration can allow science to move in exciting new directions.
