Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF)

Purpose

To get talented and interested undergraduate students at UW-Madison involved in stem cell research. SURF Fellows will be paired with a selected graduate student or postdoc mentor in one of the SCRMC faculty labs. Fellows will attend journal club style meetings with their mentors during the summer to discuss current stem cell literature as well as hear from UW-Madison faculty.

Funding

Up to five students will be selected for funded fellowships which include a $4000 stipend. Funding is provided by the SCRMC and WiCell. The SURF program is administered by the Wisconsin Stem Cell Roundtable (WiSCR), an organization of UW graduate student and postdoctoral researchers that aims to foster interaction, collaboration, dialogue, and support among UW stem cell researchers.

Requirements

  • Must be a first or second-year undergraduate student at the University of Wisconsin-Madison

  • Must be present in person if invited for an interview in Spring 2017

  • Student must be currently enrolled or have already completed a college-level biology course

  • Student must commit to a 40 hour work week for the 12 weeks of research (June 5 - August 25, 2017)

  • Student must present their research (poster or oral presentation) at the SCRMC Fall Conference (September 2017)

  • Student must participate in a WiSCR-sponsored outreach event during the summer or fall of 2017

  • Student cannot receive funding simultaneously through any other program (e.g. Hilldale, NSF, NIH, McNair, departmental funds, etc)

  • Must not already be participating in stem cell research

  • Previous research experience is not required
