Aligned Research Focus:

Culture and banking optimization

Research Description:

Dr. Ludwig's work in the laboratory of Dr. James Thomson (2001-2007) focused primarily on the optimization of human embryonic stem (ES) cell culture conditions, and resulted in the development of a defined, feeder-independent culture system for human ES cells (TeSR/mTeSR). Since moving to WiCell Research Institute, her primary research interest continues to be focused on improving human ES cell culture. Current projects include investigations into improving culture systems for pluripotent stem cells, focusing on feeder-independent, defined culture systems. Significant current research efforts include improving attachment and cloning efficiency in pluripotent (hES and iPS cells), and working to enable large-scale culture of human ES-cells. She is also involved in optimization of culture and banking practices for hES and iPS cells, to improve efficiency and reduce cost while maintaining quality and providing flexibility to the end user.
