Title: Mitochondrial Contributions to Hematopoietic Homeostasis and the Pathogenesis of Hematological Disorders
Abstract: Hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) rely on precisely coordinated metabolic programs to preserve their function, adapt to environmental cues, and sustain lifelong hematopoiesis. Mitochondria play a crucial role in supporting various metabolic pathways to meet cellular energy demands; however, the mechanisms by which mitochondrial metabolism influences HSC fate remain elusive. At the Ito Laboratory, we aim to elucidate the regulatory networks that balance healthy and malignant HSCs. For example, we have explored how mitochondrial quality control and lipid metabolism shape HSC homeostasis, and the roles of extracellular vesicles in maintaining HSC properties. In this presentation, I’ll summarize our progress in understanding how mitochondria and cellular metabolism shape HSC fate. Deeper insights into metabolic regulation will refine HSC transplantation and drive new therapies for hematological disorders.
