Tenneille Ludwig headshotTopic: 20 years of human pluripotent stem cell impact; Patents, publications and funding

Abstract: This year marks the 20th anniversary of the derivation of the first human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) and the advent of hESC research. The original isolation of hESCs, first published in 1998 (Thomson et al., 1998), opened the imagination to promising possibilities in human developmental biology research and launched a new field of regenerative medicine. In light of this significant milestone, it is appropriate to reflect on the impact of this initial breakthrough and on the work it enabled. At a time where we find funding for scientific research uncertain, it is important to recognize both the current and future impact of that initial derivation of hESCs on our society: scientifically, economically, and clinically.
