University of Wisconsin Stem Cell & Regenerative Medicine Center

Affiliated Research Centers and Programs

  1. Biotechnology Center (UWBC)

The Vision Statement of the UWBC is: “UWBC is Wisconsin’s catalyst to advance biotechnology research, education and industry for the benefit of society and the environment.”

The Mission of the UWBC is “to maximize the benefits of biotechnology to the University of Wisconsin–Madison, University of Wisconsin System, state and nation by being an excellent quality, comprehensive, multidisciplinary biotechnology center that supports, coordinates, disseminates and advances biotechnology”.

  2. Cardiovascular Research Center (CVRC)

The CVRC brings together over 130 researchers, physicians and educators to focus on ways to prevent and treat cardiac problems. These investigators represent more than 30 specialties—from genetics to pharmacology and preventive cardiology to cardiovascular surgery. They attack cardiovascular problems through basic research, clinical investigation, diagnosis, treatment and public education. Working together, Center members combine their unique perspectives, generate new ideas and reduce the time it takes to “translate” new discoveries from laboratories to the aid of patients.

  3. Center for Neuroscience

The Center for Neuroscience provides administrative and programmatic support for neuroscience in the 12 departments, 4 colleges, and 2 centers that are homes for neuroscientists on the Madison campus. Activities supported by the Center include a campus-wide lecture series, graduate education conducted through the Neuroscience Training Program, undergraduate seminars in neuroscience for students in biology and related disciplines, and symposia. The Center plays a major role in coordination of interdepartmental recruitment of new faculty, and seeks to promote expansion of neuroscience research into new areas on the Madison campus.

  4. Eye Research Institute

The goal of the UW Eye Research Institute is to bring together researchers and scholars from diverse scientific, medical and other academic backgrounds committed to increasing the understanding of normal vision and of eye diseases.

  5. Holtz Center for Science and Technology Studies

A unique collaboration across the boundaries of the modern research university to promote the understanding of science, technology and medicine as human enterprises. Science and technology studies (STS) is a growing field of study that seeks to understand how science and technology shape human lives and livelihoods and how society and culture, in turn, shape the development of science and technology. By focusing scholarly attention on science and technology as human institutions, situated in wider historical, social, and political contexts, STS provides insights into the relationship between science and technology and such basic categories of social thought as race and gender, poverty and development, trust and credibility, participation and democracy, health and pathology, risk and uncertainty, globalization, and environmental protection.

  6. Paul P. Carbone Comprehensive Cancer Center (UWCCC)

The UW Comprehensive Cancer Center is the only comprehensive cancer center in Wisconsin, as designated by the National Cancer Institute. An integral part of the UW School of Medicine and Public Health, our cancer center unites more than 250 physicians and scientists who work together in translating discoveries from research laboratories into new treatments that benefit cancer patients.

  7. UW Institute for Clinical and Translational Research

is to create an environment that transforms research into a continuum from investigation through discovery to translation into real-life community practice, thereby linking even the most basic research to practical improvements in human health.

  8. Waisman Center

The Waisman Center’s mission is the advancement of knowledge about human development, developmental disabilities, and neurodegenerative diseases throughout the lifespan. The Center is one of nine national facilities that includes a Mental Retardation Developmental Disabilities Research Center and a University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities.

  9. WiCell Research Institute

The WiCell Research Institute is dedicated to expanding the frontiers of science and medicine by unlocking the potential of stem cells. As a supporting organization of the University of Wisconsin–Madison, WiCell conducts research, supports research at UW–Madison, hosts the National Stem Cell Bank, provides training for scientists, and offers educational outreach programs for K–12 students and the community.

  10. Wisconsin Institutes for Discovery

The Wisconsin Institutes for Discovery are twin institutes, one public and one private, to be constructed in the heart of the UW–Madison campus as a hub for interdisciplinary research. The world-class facilities will foster collaborations involving an array of disciplines and will spur new knowledge, new inventions, new treatments and cures for disease, and economic development for the region.

  11. Wisconsin National Primate Research Center (WNPRC)

The Wisconsin National Primate Research Center is one of eight federally supported (NIH-NCRR) National Primate Research Centers and the only one in the Midwest. More than 250 center scientists, through competitive grants, conduct research in primate biology with relevance to human and animal health. The Primate Center is based in the Graduate School of the University of Wisconsin–Madison. The Center has strong research and teaching links to the UW Schools or Colleges of Medicine, Letters and Science, Agriculture and Life Sciences, and Veterinary Medicine. The Center is AAALAC accredited and its policies adhere to the U.S. Government Principles for the Utilization and Care of Vertebrate Animals Used in Testing, Research, and Training.
